There was a lot of hot air about him being the next leader
of the Labour party (once the Dear Leader retires, after a
fourth glorious term, naturally). Now it would *really*
surprise me if that ever happened! In the political suicide
stakes it would rank with the day the Tories made William
Hague their leader. I remember sitting on the bus listening
to the news on my walkman when it was announced that Hague
had beaten Kenneth Clarke. I exclaimed "What?" so loudly that
everybody on the bus turned round to look at me.

Look on the bright side. That makes him more consistent than
many in New Labour.
But seriously, words can not explain how depressing it was to
hear him bleating that the Government can't afford to pay for
higher education because that money is needed for primary
education. It was shameless the way he set the two against
each other to create a false dilemma. I thought the policy was
"Education Education Education" not "Education vs Education
vs Education". Of course, the truth is that we now have a war
to pay for. It seems to me that we are are regressing into the
19th century rather then moving forward into the 21st.
I can say for certain that if I had been faced with having to
pay £20,000 of my own money to go to University then I simply
wouldn't have gone. No amount of cheap credit would have
persuaded me go £20,000 under.
Daniel.
